Netherspite -- Banish phase

Post by Drumble »

Saw this post in the raid forums -- had no idea that he took more damage when in shadow form!  I like this idea a lot: After attempting every boss fight in Karazhan the first couple of times, and reading the strats on various websites, we were able to handle Kara bosses pretty well. However, Netherspite always gave us trouble, and it was always during the nether phase. We kept hearing how he stopped turning when he started casting, about how you could run behind him, or about how you can run to a wall or a corner, but we discovered two things. First, its mostly crap. He turns around and re-faces people all the time while he is casting nether breath and its just isn't easy to run out of range. Second, all that damn running around means that people aren't dpsing or healing at a time when Netherspite is most susceptible to damage, and they are out of position to deal with the next portal phase, when you have to pick up the beams immediately. So, we basically decided to just spread out in a circle to avoid area effect damage from the breath, dps throughout the entire nether breath phase and heal whoever was eating nether breaths. It was amazing how much easier that decision made the fight. The other thing it did was allow everyone to be in position to pick up the beams as soon as he came out of the nether phase into the portal phase.

Netherspite -- Banish phase

Really I think both techniques work -- either staying in or running out.IF we run out though -- we NEED to have someone soaking up that red beam the entire time because it has such a detrimental effect on our overall dps. I think staying in sounds like the way to do it though ...

Netherspite -- Banish phase

Awesome mage information here -- apparently his nether breath is 35 yards, and 41 yards is fireball range (with spec). If you're having trouble continuing DPS during banish phase and you'd rather run here's what you can do: Netherspite will randomly target someone repeatedly in your raid. If the target is more than 35 yards away they are not a valid target for him. When he does target someone, he will try to find three others in a cone radius to shoot netherbreath at (regardless of distance), and if he can't he will try another target. This is what we do. We send all DPS out to 36 yard distance. Mages and other casters are still in range to DPS (fireball has 41 yard range i believe?). We leave the tank in to build threat. The tank must have his BACK AWAY FROM THE RAID or netherspite will be able to find people in the cone radius even tho they are out of range. A healer can stay with the tank, but stand off to the side, but again facing in a way that if netherspite faces them they have no1 behind them. We did this and only once did he end up casting netherbreath on the tank/healer. Spell damage increases to 200% during this phase so it makes up for the lack of melee DPS. Once he changes colors (if you move in too early he'll cast) we move in and take the beams.

Yeah, that's good info.  Was looking at something similar because I didn't realize that once he finds a valid in-range target, everybody who's in that cone radius will get hit, even if they are out of range.  So that explains some of the strange things we were seeing on night 1.  But good job last night, killing him was definitely satisfying!
