High King Maulgar -- Initial Impressions

Post by Drumble »

First I'd like to say WOOOOT! that we finally got to run as a full guild again.  Many guilds fall apart because of the whole A&B 10-man team rift.  I'm not sure we're past it completely - but we just got a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel! What we read was definately true -- it's all about the initial pull.  Well ... that is to say, it is all about positioning, so if the pull goes bad it can quickly turn into a clusterfart.I honestly don't have a lot to say about the actual *encounter* being that I was staring at Ogre Crotch for the majority of it (gotta pay the repair bills somehow -- where's my mouthwash?) -- so my actual "encounter learning experience" is based mainly on dealing with the High King.  I hope this post can be a repository of information from everyone on the entire encounter and thereby a good growing/learning experience for us all.Additionally we still are lacking some classes for the encounter (obviously) as we not only had to PuG a few people (and thanks to the Masquers folks for helping!) but we also had people switching from their mains to play needed alts in healing roles.  Extra thanks to Onestar/(Mahonri and Kaittlynn) for swapping over.  I'm not entirely sure what we can do short of a direct marketting campaign. :)  I guess we should if this is going to be our weekly gig instead of relying on whoever responds to the LFG -- I'm not sure if any of you checked out wowarmory ... but it was definately enlightening. As far as tanking High King goes, I've learned a couple things in regards to his skills.  For one thing, he has two high-damage skills (Arcing Slash & Mighty Blow) which were hitting for about 6-7k damage.  We should get a Curse of Weakness or Scorpid (??) Sting or "something" extra on him because those are just brutal mixed in with his normal 5k hits.  Granted I wasn't fully raid potted (didn't use Ironshield pots / Runes or Warding/Shielding, etc.) -- but you can imagine what a big chunk of life that takes off when these skills were hitting at the same moment as a melee swing -- 11-12k life >poof!<.About every other whirlwind I was able to pop the Moroes trinket and avoid some of that damage, but now I get the reason why they encourage a bear tank for this guy.  He's definately a punisher. The BIG thing I need to improve on is there are *no excuses* for getting a crushing blow.  This guy is delivering the pain in a big way, having extra damage on top of it is unacceptible.  In most instances I was hitting it about every 6-7 seconds (5 sec cooldown) -- and in some of these he snuck in a crush.  There were even occasions I see where a good 10 seconds went by .. I fail.  This must change - this must be my highest priority, threat should not be a problem outside of the initial pull.  I can't hit this key when it's up -- I have to MASH it when it's almost up. Sorry for the times I died -- it's not a healing problem when I get crushed... this fight, as with all of them are summed up in a few words - and this one is not only "organization check" -- but it's a "tank gear/mitigation check", next time I'll do it right - promise!

On the healing end of the fight, I think in general we did fairly decent.  It looks like everyone stuck to their targets really well (except me on that last attempt when I had to scuttle over to blave since I forgot to reassign someone to him ><  That left a big healing gap on HKM though).  I think next time I'll try and mix up who does what.  Hopefully we'll also be able to get 8 full healers.  That last attempt we did fairly well with 7, and I think just adding a resto druid to keep a big old stack of HOTs on chuunks all the time to keep him topped off would've helped a bunch.

After i reread wowwiki i saw that we have mixed up the priest and the shammy position, the shammy is supposed to be pul all the way down to the entrance where we came from, and the priest can stay near the lock, so melee can switch to lock fast after he's dead. I couldnt pay attention the whole fight to see how the damage is going, but w/ the same hitpoints for the adds, me and hardwigg got the shammy to 50% w/o beeing in dps gear, so idk if some heals werent interupted, or if dps was split up on the priest he should go down much faster. Problem is our guild is still lacking primary healers (ppl had to change to alts to fill up the healing spots - thanks for that). We need at least 2 or 3 locks for the fight (to have 2 feldemons enslaved) and Onestar and Kaithlyn had to change. Anyway, for me was a positive experience.

I throughly enjoyed the attempts, as for the repair bill...hated it  i'm going to work on the priest some more as her gear hasn't changed and needs improvement should she be called on again to heal. Not that i want to get into a full time healing spot but it's easier to fill a ranged dps slot than a healing one. Just a option for healers, Clique and grid together really help( TY Dudepal for showing me the light) not having to lift off from your main heal target and still being able to heal someone else is a very nice feeling and saves you from those rando clicks. I'm probably going to bring my hunter to the guild soon. not so much for raiding or anything more so i can read what's going on in chat instead of asking John every 3 seconds while i'm grind mats or something.... Anyway now we have some experience and an idea of what to expect we need to keep expanding on it and one day we'll be posting Gruul's Lair = farm status. Paul Onestar/Starsaver

Hey all, gratz on getting the raid together.  I had a show last night or I would've tried to hop on.  I'm heading out of town again next week (will try to get in some Arena this weekend with you Hardwigg if you are reading this).  But I'm hoping to get back to a Wednesday raiding night at somepoint in the next few weeks.  I'll hit you all up in-game to see if you are still looking for a resto at that point.  - Jon (Myrdinn)

Yeah I think those hots would help quite a bit.  From a DPS perspective, we kicked the crap out of that priest.  The guides I have read suggest that taking him down with only 2 or 3 power word shields is a good job.... Umm, I think I saw him do that twice the whole night, we smoked him before he even did it once on half the attempts.  Good job everyone!  Killers: AoE damage from bad positioning, and loose felhounds.  (oh and face pulls haha)-Scott

I think I saw some big, ginormous pastel colored axe that caught their attention... lol.. anyways, I feel it was a positive event aimed at not only attempting new content but serving as a means of getting all of us together.  We definitely learned something and will be better prepared next time.-Mahnalor

Speaking of preparations, (not including pugs here), there are still guild members without enchants on their gear.  I am not talking about 400+g enchants like mongoose and the best of the best, but not getting a 20g enchant or a 90g helmet glyph on an epic piece of gear is simply irresponsible.  I could understand if there was 1 piece of gear (I am still getting my mongoose mats for my MH), or something missing here and there, but seriously.  I know we have hashed this point out in the past, but the officers are going to start enforcing some rules around coming to gruul's and beyond if you have no enchants on most of your gear.  Basically, when a guild helps you get a priceless purple from a raid, you owe it to the guild to get it enchanted.  If you can't afford the best enchant money can buy, thats fine, but anything under 100g is perfectly reasonable.  Especially with daily quests now available to help you get 50+g in a half hour from quest rewards alone.  .... Noone is expecting you to get it done the second you get the drop either, its ok to take a week to get the mats together.

Even though we got our asses thoroughly kicked, I had fun. What I had major problems with was "tanking" the Warlock. He'd constantly be Death Coil spamming me. I'd get out of one coil, run back and maybe get a sunder or taunt and be running away in terror again. I couldn't keep him in one spot. Just getting past the trash (which was a cake walk) was pretty awesome though. And seeing almost the whole guild plus friends from Masquers all around.

I'm not entirely sure who your talking about as far as not having enchants but if your going to bring that up then i think spec's should also be brought up. And that's goes for Kara to. Some of us myself included pug'd heroic for better gear to accentuate our class/spec to be more prepared for Kara and other raids. Some people are even playing 2 toons as mains for the betterment of everyone in the guild. I, myself brought my priest who was little if at all prepared for Gruul when my intention was to bring my lock. So maybe you need to either name names or put more pressure on the people who aren't giving 110% when others are giving 150% Paul/Starsaver/Onestar

I am sure that the people being talked about will be spoken to in game.  Can't really single someone out and name names here in the forums in front of everone.  This was more of a general post to hopefully bring the issue to the attention of the people who need it.  Everyone should give themselves a once over and see if they are in need.  And we totally understand about not being prepared when you are expectin to bring a different toon than you did.  I know that more than anyone lol.  I usually get Mahonri all ready to go, then I work on the little dude just in case he is going to be needed.  Maybe I need to extend that to Jazzmynn too lol.    But Miramel was right... Why have a Ferrari if you are just gonna put crap tires on it, or no tires on it?  If you are going to have a sweet purple you might as well put the best on it or at least something good.  And why not?  You personally doing better will make the group/raid as a whole excel.  That is what we are going for, and that is what we hope the individual is going for as well.  If you don't have the mats for a sweet enchant ask around.  I'm sure someone will chip in and help a little.  It is for the betterment of the guild.  Let's work together to get everyone up to where they need to be.
